Last month L'Rain announced her new album fata morgana and shared the phenomenal lead single "soulless cycle," which some are calling the Song Of The Summer. I would not argue with them. On July 4, she briefly put the track "July 5" on streaming for a day. Now Taja Cheek is back with "borderline."
Whereas "soulless cycle" intrigued with its unremitting chaos, "borderline" is gentle and dreamy before snowballing into a beautiful, buzzy blitz. It comes with an equally awesome music video directed by Mackai Sharp and featuring our recent Album Of The Week honoree Tasha, plus Arooj Aftab, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Rena Anakwe, and E. Jane. It also has footage of an ice block being broken down by a chisel and a chainsaw, which is very visually pleasing. Check it out below.
