Nick Hakim – “Endlessly Waiting” & “The Reason”

Jack McKain

In a couple of weeks, the ultra-talented Queens musician and widespread collaborator Nick Hakim will release his very cool new album I Can See. When he's not assisting other artists, Hakim makes woozy, delicate psychedelic soul, and he pushes that sound ever further inward on the new record. He sounds like Marvin Gaye sleepily murmuring to himself before drifting off to sleep. We've been very into the early singles "Real Here Now," "Water," and the title track. Today, Hakim shares two more.

"Endlessly Waiting," one of Nick Hakim's new tracks, is a silky whisper built on what sounds like J Dilla remixing the High Llamas. Director Terence Nance shot the video in a Baltimore community art space that's been made to look like a boxing gym, and Hakim stars alongside the former Rollins Band/Sonny Sharrock bassist Melvin Gibbs. "The Reason," Hakim's other new song, is sadly not a Hoobastank cover. Instead, it's a soft folk-funk vamp that stretches over seven minutes. Check out both of them below.

I Can See is out 7/24 on Earseed Records.
