Weezer's new song "C.E.O." is all about the pressure put on aging rockers to relive their glory days, and the song itself goes out of its way to relive Weezer's glory days. It's structured as a musical redux of the 1994 smash "Undone (The Sweater Song)," the track that made Weezer famous in the first place. The "C.E.O." video also repeatedly calls back to the classic Spike Jonze-directed "Sweater Song" clip, but now with a lot more celebrity cameos.
"C.E.O." is the latest single from Weezer's upcoming self-titled LP, their Gold Album, which the band recorded with producers Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume, formerly known as Kenny Beats. We've already posted their songs "Shine Again" and the Wednesday collab "We Might As Well Be Strangers." Along with the new track, Weezer announced a bunch of touring plans. They'd already unveiled their North American arena tour with the Shins and Silversun Pickups, and now they're also hitting Japan, the UK, and Europe with Taking Back Sunday.
The "C.E.O." video opens with veteran sketch-comedian Robs Riggle and Huebel as executives who want Weezer to relive their glory days, but the real casting coup is Curry Barker, the young auteur who just made the out-of-nowhere horror blockbuster Obsession, as the music video director. (The actual directors are Brendan Walter and Jasper Graham.) As the "Sweater Song" homage plays out, various other famous people also pop up, and I'd rather not spoil things by mentioning their names. They're all tagged at the bottom of the post, anyway.
