Back in the spring we learned Way Dynamic, aka Melbourne-based Dylan Young, had signed to Jagjaguwar for a reissue of his recent album Massive Shoe, as well as North American tour dates with fellow emerging indie favorites Star Moles and Slippers. That reissue includes "Officially," a new song not included on the original Massive Shoe, which is out today with a music video.
"Officially" maintains the loose, pleasant chill-bro singer-songwriter vibes heard on the rest of the album. "Officially addicted," Young repeats throughout, referring to a newfound love. But like all Way Dynamic music, there's a whiff of melancholia in it too. "I wrote ‘Officially’ the week I met my girlfriend, so it really is a shamefully joyous love song,” Young says. "But it also contends with the downside of being addicted to someone - I am a very compulsive person."
I described prior single "Miffed It" as "Nick Drake with a beat-up ballcap." That influence remains here, even as the backbeat is more propulsive, the mood lighter and airier, than anything Nick Drake ever recorded. There's some real tasty lead guitar on here too. I want to book this guy on a bill with Real Estate and Mac DeMarco in 2012. (Or 2027?)
