Song People is a sneakily informative band name. It sounds generic, but it suggests the Philly upstarts value songs over, say, riffs or vibes. There's some truth to that, but band names can also be deceptive. Song People are not the down-the-middle power-pop I expected when I first read about them. There's certainly some jangle-pop in the mix, but they also name-drop Fairport Convention and Cocteau Twins in their promo materials, and both of those make sense after hearing Shaina Kapeluck's regal, statuesque vocals. Basically if you loved indie rock in the '80s, you're gonna love this band.
In October, Song People will follow up their 2024 debut album Like Somebody Calling Your Name with a second LP called Tho I Seem Tame. The album title comes from the last line of Sir Thomas Wyatt’s Petrarchan sonnet “Whoso List to Hunt," dedicated to his childhood friend Anne Boleyn. Our first preview is lead single "Silver Flag," a minor-key pop tune with a driving tempo and a piercing hook. Listen below.
