Time to get stupid excited: There's a new Dummy album coming soon. The LA electronic rock retro-futurists have signed to Polyvinyl for the follow-up to 2024's Album Of The Week-worthy Free Energy. Titled do you love the color of the sky?, it's out in October, co-produced by Dummy and Joo-Joo Ashworth, and preceded by today's lead single "Full Spectrum Dominance."
Dummy are name-dropping influences like Disco Inferno, Ray Of Light, Björk, and Seefeel in their press release, where the band's Joe Trainor has also offered this interpretation of the new single: "I was trying to make something just heavier, and we joked it was our nu metal song, during the recording we added the tambourine that gives it a more dancey vibe, Deee-Lite meets Deftones."
In terms of subject matter, "Full Spectrum Dominance" is Dummy's contribution to the AI discourse, as singer and keyboardist Emma Maatman explains:
This is the Technofeudalism bop. Tech billionaires are treating AI like the new Alchemy, using it as a source of power and magic. This supposedly soon-to-be all-powerful technology could not exist without harvesting all of humanity’s intellectual property and collective work. "Prima Materia" is the building block of all alchemical matter, so in the canon of the song, we humans are the Prima Materia.
