In a couple of weeks, Atlanta metal titans Mastodon will return with Marrow Deep, their first album since the sudden, recent death of former member Brent Hinds. We've already posted early singles "Your Ghost Again" and the Josh Homme collab "Snakes For Dinner," and the album also has contributions from members of Gojira, Clutch, Converge, and Lamb Of God, as well as Black Sabbath legend Geezer Butler. Today, Mastodon share the wooly new song "In The Ruins."
Recently, Hurricane Helene flooded the house of Mastodon singer/bassist Troy Sanders and destroyed his family's belongings, an added hardship in the time that Mastodon were mourning both Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor's mother Michele Lawrence. "In The Ruins" is a wooly churn that builds over nearly six minutes; it's about standing in literal wreckage and trying to find a way forward. Hey Beautiful Jerk directed the animated video, which follows the psychedelic journey of a disembodied eyeball named Frank. In a press release, Hey Beautiful Jerk says:
The initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for "In The Ruins" came to me when I was in the ER for ten hours with the worst eye infection of my life. The pain was so bad it felt like my eye was revolting and wanted to escape my head. I had just talked to Brann about the meaning of the song and how it was inspired by his and Troy's recent losses. The expression "picking up the pieces" came to me, and I sketched a very rough version of Frank on my phone, capturing the idea as fast as I could before my eye wanted to escape my face once again.
