Back in 2016, a young Bandcamp-native singer-songwriter named Sophie Allison released For Young Hearts, her official debut EP as Soccer Mommy. Our former colleague James Rettig was all over that shit. You may think of yourself as a Soccer Mommy OG, but James was the earliest of adopters — so early, in fact, that his post about For Young Hearts alludes to previous collections songs for the recently sad, which has since disappeared from Bandcamp, and the two-part songs from my bedroom. Given the existence of those releases, one could make the case that For Young Hearts was not really Soccer Mommy's debut, but it was the breakout release that landed her on our 2016 Best New Bands list, a remarkable time capsule that also includes heavy hitters like Japanese Breakfast, Mannequin Pussy, Moses Sumney, Noname, Pinegrove, and Show Me The Body.
With that history in mind, of course we are pleased to join Allison in celebrating the 10th anniversary of For Young Hearts today. To mark that milestone, she has surprise-released a deluxe edition of the EP featuring three bonus tracks: a demo of the previously unreleased "julian," a new version of "grown," and "you won't leave," a track from an earlier Soccer Mommy release that has never been on streaming services. Somehow, the deluxe For Young Hearts isn't on Bandcamp, but you can stream it on all your standard DSPs.
