Usually performers have to worry about fans in the audience throwing projectiles at them — just earlier this month, Billy Strings was the latest victim, getting hit in the head with an object rumored to be a lighter. However, sometimes it's your own bandmate that gets you. Last night in Springfield, IL, Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas swung the mic stand right into his bandmate Paul Doucette's head.
At the Illinois State Fair, MB20 — who are, in case you were wondering, still kicking it — were playing "Bent" from their 2000 album Mad Season, the band's sole #1 hit. And Rob Thomas was really swinging that mic stand around. Paul Doucette — the group's drummer, rhythm guitarist, and backing vocalist — was manning the guitar when he was struck in the head. He promptly exited the stage, but the band finished playing the song without stopping. Afterward, Thomas offered him an apology in front of the crowd, saying, "I'm so sorry. I'm gonna keep apologizing to you, like, all month."
Despite his injury, Doucette appeared to be in good humor when sharing a video of himself after, as he was getting pieces of his in-ear monitor removed from his ear: "Rob took me the fuck out with swinging the fuckin' mic stand during that show. And I have bits of my in-ear, which he fuckin' smashed in my ear, that are now in my ear, and so Lindsey and Jamie are now trying to get it out of my ear." "Fucking NAILED Paul with my mic stand tonight!!" Thomas wrote on Instagram, reposting the video. "#sorrypaul."
