Detroit indie rock fave Stef Chura is returning from a seven-year absence this fall with new album Dancing Alone On The Concrete. She made it in Athens, Georgia with Robert Schneider and his Elephant 6 associates, and half of R.E.M. played on the twangy, jangly lead single "Danny." The same can't be said about Chura's two new tracks out today, but that doesn't mean you should sleep on them.
Today's new songs present two more sides of what's shaping up to be an eclectic album. "Lovesick" is a stripped-down piano ballad. “It’s about desiring love and the journey to being lovable," Chura says. "It’s also about a toxic love and how it can feel addictive to want to be with someone who’s bad for you... I knew that this person made me feel bad yet I still wanted more of their attention.”
The other new Stef Chura song, "Thunder And Lightning," is an anxious, minimal, upbeat keyboard rocker that makes me feel like it's 2002 all over again (a little Kill The Moonlight here, a little High Society there). Here's Chura on that one: "Sometimes jealousy can turn into curiosity. Instead of becoming anxious I became a little more observant of the situation. And maybe in some ways this song was a way of having a little control over a situation I did not feel in control of."
