Here, at Stereogum, we already love Friko. But today, they've given us a reason to love them even more via the new single "Necessary." Earlier this year they released their killer Something Worth Waiting For, which placed near the top of our list of this year's best LPs so far. Now they're letting us have more of that glorious album's world. They've announced an expanded version, coming Sept. 11 via ATO Records.
"Necessary" isn't necessarily brand new. The group released it as a B-side/bonus track on the Japanese edition of Something Worth Waiting For, and they've performed it live, notably at Lollapalooza 2024. In a press release, the band's Niko Kapetan explained, "This was actually the first new song we ever played live as a four piece. An ode to imposter syndrome and trying to convince yourself out of that feeling."
It was also reported, in an interview from this past April, that the B-side pays homage to Friko's former touring partner Water From Your Eyes. “All my love for records is embedded in the writing, because you become an unconscious conduit for your influences," Bailey Minzenberger added.
