The records that the Whitby, Ontario musician Brandon Williams makes under the name Chastity are pretty simple and direct, but it's hard to put an exact genre tag on them. Heavy emo? Heart-on-sleeve shoegaze? Power-pop that's drowning in fuzz and also anguish? Chastity's music sounds like Jesu and the Promise Ring at the same time. I'm very into it.
Today, Williams announces plans to follow his 2024 self-titled Chastity album with a new one called I Built This Prison Myself. The new LP is based around a specific theme. In 1976, a 16-year-old patient at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, in Williams' hometown, burned down a gigantic barn that was sitting on the hospital grounds. If you're looking for a symbolic act of resistance in the face of absolute control, you can't do much better than that. Brandon Williams got his start putting on DIY punk shows at a barn in Whitby, so it must hold special significance.
"Misled Youth," the lead single from I Built This Prison Myself, is a heartfelt fuzz-pedal stomper that Williams sings in a hopeless yelp. Really cool song. Check it out below, along with the album's tracklist.
