Last fall, Mac DeMarco handed out CD-R copies of an unannounced new album called Dog On The Rock on his European tour. That wasn't the only secret, tour-only DeMarco album to materialize over the past year. He's since created three more CDs, distributed under the titles Seven Off The Two, Seaplane Dog, and The View From Tian Tian. These were previously little treasures available only to those who went to see a Mac DeMarco show, but as of today, the whole world gets to partake.
All four of the albums went up on streaming services today. DeMarco's own Mac's Record Label, which has been the home of all his music since 2019's Here Comes The Cowboy. Based on a quick skim, they seem to maintain the shaggy, informal vibe of his 2020s output. There are lots of strictly soft-rockin' instrumental tracks, and when he does sing, it's usually wordless vocals that treat his voice like one more instrument in the mix. Seaplane Dog, which boasts the best cover art of the four albums, does have a couple tracks with lyrics, "2 Madam Crown" and "Wave Goodbye." But mostly it's like getting access to DeMarco's demos collection.
Maybe that sounds like a data dump to you, or maybe it sounds like a window into the mind of our most fascinating musical artists. If you're in the latter camp, please enjoy all four CDs in streaming form at your DSP of choice.
