As this year's just-unveiled Camp Flog Gnaw lineup will attest, Tyler, The Creator is an eclectic soul who cannot be anchored to any particular genre. But it's always cool when Tyler reengages with his roots and gets back on some real underground rap shit. That's what he does on "Look Like My Mama," the new single where he joins forces with South Central LA rap monster AZ Chike.
AZ Chike has been making fun, disrespectful music for nearly a decade now. In June, his single "Packed Up" made our 5 Best Songs Of The Week list. AZ Chike probably got his biggest-ever look in 2024, when he and Kendrick Lamar traded bars on "Peekaboo," from Kendrick's GNX album. He's about to head out on tour, and his album No Rest For The Wicked comes out next month. Today, AZ Chike and Tyler team up on "Look Like My Mama," an extremely fun new back-and-forth shit-talk session.
Tyler produced the funky, cartoonsh beat, and there's no hook, just these two guys going back and forth, hitting punchline after punchline. It's a classic tag-team attack from two rappers who have never released a song together before. (50 Cent has a writing credit on the track, and I can't figure out why. Maybe there's a sample.) The song also has a very entertaining Stacking Memories-directed video in which Tyler and AZ Chike reenact scenes from a bunch of movies: Napoleon Dynamite, Dead Presidents, Paid In Full, Sinners, and Men In Black. I haven't seen Paid In Full in a long time. Might have to fix that this weekend. Below, check out that video and AZ Chike's tour dates.
