The Danish producer Trentemøller has worked in a range of rock, pop, and electronic styles over the years, from glitch, downtempo, and darkwave to dream-pop and synthwave. In recent years he's been pushing further and further into the shoegaze realm, and he goes all the way with it on the lead single from his new album.
The self-titled LP is set for release in November. "Terrified," out today, is a dreamy swoon with new wave foundations. Its gorgeous canvas is graced by vocals from Mew's Jonas Bjerre, who also produced the music video. The result reminds me of peak M83, and I'm not mad about it.
A few words from Trentemøller:
When the instrumental was done, I sent it to Jonas Bjerre with a few melody ideas, which he took further while adding new melodies of his own.
I think sometimes when you dream about things that make you fearful and uneasy, it's your mind trying to prepare you for any scenario, like you're processing catastrophes that have not and may not ever happen.
"Terrified" is probably the poppiest song on the album. In its original form it sounded a lot more shoegazey, but I wanted it to be crisper and clearer, less washed out. So I went for synths that almost sound like human voices, with a magical, otherworldly quality to them.
