You may know Lou Turner as 1/3 of the brilliant rootsy/folksy Nashville indie band Styrofoam Winos or as a regular in Ryan Davis' Roadhouse Band. She also has two solo albums to her name, and it's about to be three when Strangels drops this fall. The newly announced LP kicks off with "Ants Underfoot," which is out today as the lead single.
Turner produced Strangels, and her partner and Styrofoam Winos bandmate Trevor Nikrant mixed it with her assistance. Nikrant also chipped in some instrumentation. Strangels was produced by Lou Turner and engineered and mixed by Trevor Nikrant at the Golden Tone Zone, with assistance from Lou Turner.
Sounds funny, but this record is the story of my life. Not ~finding my voice~ but pulling all of my disparate voices into one spot. The road dog, the ex-librarian who loves to stay at home with her cats. And especially the pastor’s kid entertaining themselves in a church after hours, making up songs (and words) in an empty choir loft. Hangin with all the strange angels along the way. I am grateful to everyone in my life who encouraged this one, knowingly or not. Hope you enjoy listening.
The flute-laden "Ants Underfoot" is easygoing but melancholic, with Turner pondering "degrees of complicity" and apologizing to the bugs she's smashing with the soles of her shoes. "Truthfully/ Some uncertainty/ Helps us to believe/ We don't know everything," she sings at one point, which later becomes "Hopefully/ Some uncertainty/ Helps us to receive/ We can't get everything." Turner made the "Ants Underfoot" video with her other Winos bandmate, Joe Kenkel, and you can watch it below.
