The Chicago-born, LA-based saxophonist and composer Josh Johnson is rooted in jazz, but he has traveled all over the map in his work with bands like the improv supergroup SML, Flea's Honora band, and Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet. Next month, he'll release Animative, his first-ever solo album, and it'll include contributions from musicians like Meshell Ndegeocello, Macie Stewart, Marquis Hill, and Ben Lumsdaine.
Josh Johnson co-produced Animative with Paul Bryan, and it includes some of his experiments with synths and loops. Lead single "Reece" is a horn-centric instrumental, and it's short but rich and layered. Below, you'll find that song and the Animative tracklist.
