The heavy shoegaze boom continues. Right now, about a million underground bands are messing around with Deftones and Hum influences, and some of them are huge. But Held got started long before people were checking for that stuff. Oakland musician Daniel Phounsavan started Held as a solo project in 2015, and he released a 2016 demo and a 2019 self-titled EP. Now, after seven years, Held return with a new record.
Phounsavan, the only permanent member of Held, had a recent stint playing guitar in the Bay Area band Buddy Junior and didn't write any songs for years. But now, he has enlisted his former Buddy Junior bandmate Jaybe, who produced and recorded Held's upcoming Star Falling EP at his house. Lead single "Standby" his a huge, crashing pile-up of guitars and synths, and you can hear it below.
