Australian greats the Church have been making jangly, gauzy space-out music for nearly half a century now, and they were giants of the late-'80s college rock universe. I covered them in my Alternative Number Ones column a couple of years ago, and it wasn't even for "Under The Milky Way Tonight." In that time, the Church have never stopped making new music, and they've just announced plans to follow 2024's Eros Zeta And The Perfumed Guitars with a new LP called Lacuna.
The Church's classic-era lineup is basically still intact; Patti Smith drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, their most recent recruit, joined up in 1990. Lacuna is the band's 28th studio album, and it's got 17 songs. Lead single "Western" is a pleasant zone-out that they recorded in Austin. Listen below.
