Spencer Radcliffe is back as Blithe Field. The Midwestern musician is releasing his new album Soft Core Hard Wear, the follow-up to 2023's Grits Kissed, next month via Orindal Records. The first preview of the project is the single "Milked Rainbow," which is an incredible title alone. But the song itself is also mystifying and weird. It's fuzzy like a VHS tape that you haven't unearthed in decades.
A press release details how the 18-track project was cobbled together via synthesizer, sampler, and cassette tape:
Eighteen unknown zones visited. Corrupted flash game files reconstructed. Cartoon floppy disk factory on the night shift. Point and click memories. Soft Core Hard Wear ☻
Lost in the loading screen. Perplexed at the plaza. Cat in the Christmas tree with the singing lights shorted. Soft Core Hard Wear ☻
Trick candles melting onto the birthday cake. Movie theater patterned carpets being vacuumed after hours. Plumbing beneath the water park being repaired in the off-season. Soft Core Hard Wear ☻
The album, which was recorded winter 2025 to Tascam 244 in Nelsonville, Ohio, also has an accompanying full-length movie "comprised of warped and meted together found VHS tapes, color, and general video experiments."
