Palo Alto singer Remi Wolf started off as a kind of alt-pop artist, but she seems to be inching ever-closer to actual pop music. Wolf's new album Mud comes out next month, and we've already posted the singles "Twiggy" and "Bottle." Today, she shares "I Won't Cry," a big, bruised old-school ballad with some country and some Southern rock in its DNA. It's got a big, melodramatic chorus, and she really sinks her teeth into it. Wolf co-produced "I Won't Cry" with Jack DeMeo and Solomonphonic, and the three of them co-wrote it with Gigi Grombacher and Jamie McLaughlin. In a press release, she says:
"I Won’t Cry" came out of one of the first writing trips we did in Big Bear for this album, and it was one of those songs that just immediately felt special to me. The three hours it took us to write and record it felt like we were all under some kind of magic spell. I would play the demo for friends, and by the end they’d be crying. I knew it was stirring up something very real in people, and I knew it had to be on the record. It’s sad and yearning and dramatic and kind of pathetic in a way that I really love. It’s genuinely one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and I’m so happy you finally get to hear it!!!
Wolf co-directed the "I Won't Cry" video with Milo Nichols, and it's got her taking pickup truck through a car wash. It's below.
