Slinky indie-soul adventurer and unlikely hitmaker Steve Lacy released his most recent album Oh yeah? over the summer, and he'll spend the fall touring across North America. On Sunday night, Lacy kicked off that tour at the Armory in Minneapolis. Midway through his set, Lacy busted out a cover of Smiths deep cut.
The Smiths song that Lacy took on was "This Night Has Opened My Eyes," which the band first recorded in a 1983 Peel session. The track has appeared on the compilations Hatful Of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs, but it never showed up on a proper Smiths LP, at least if I'm reading these Wikipedia pages right. Lacy sang it in a Morrissey voice while playing guitar and wearing no shirt and some very shiny pants. “It’s just been one of my favorite songs since I was stoner in high school,” he said. “It might really suck.” Below, watch a couple of fan videos and check out the original track.
