The Smashing Pumpkins' classic blockbuster double album Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness actually turned 30 last year, but the band is just now getting around to celebrating that anniversary on a new arena tour. Earlier this year, the band announced their Rats In A Cage Tour, advertising "two unique sets celebrating Mellon Collie at 30 & nearly four decades of unruly hits & dark treasures." The tour kicked off in Columbus last night, and the world got to see what that means.
Last night, the Smashing Pumpkins took the stage at Columbus' Value City Center, seemingly with no opening act, and played a massive 32-song show full of live rarities and a few debuts. In the first of their two sets, the band played 16 of the 28 tracks from Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, including some songs — "Cupid De Locke," "Fuck You (And Ode To No One)," the mighty "Galapogos" — that have been absent from the band's shows for nearly two decades.
The second set veered all over the band's history, from the obvious Siamese Dream hits to late-career obscurities. Along the way, they played a few songs, including their extremely early demo track "Jesus Is The Sun," that they'd never done live before. They had cool lights and stage costumes, too.
