The Portland-based singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane already graced us with one ambitious album this year: Elevator Songs, a theatrical, high-concept collaboration with the vocal group Roomful Of Teeth. Today he announces another collaborative LP, this time with Finland's Pekka Kuusisto under the band name Council.
Council's debut album This Day, Every Day will be out before month's end. They recorded it in Reykjavík, Portland, and Los Angeles in three sessions over the course of a year, from June 2024 to May 2025. Today we get to preview two tracks. Opener "Panic," which features outro vocals by Elizabeth Ziman, is a gently head-spun acoustic ballad sung by Kuusisto. "Every day, every day I keep trying," he sings. "Don't you know repetition is a form of change?" The other new one, "mirrorworld," is alternately chilly and aflame, a Kahane-sung synth voyage delivered in his signature style, erudite and emotionally charged.
Both songs are great, so listen below.
