We got another Slayyyter banger! Future generations of pop scholars will have to study Slayyyter's 2026 run; it has been a glorious thing to witness. Back in April, Slayyyter released the dizzy, auteurist trash-pop opus WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, which came in at #1 on our mid-year list. Since then Slayyyter has toured hard, performing for huge and rambunctious crowds. (She was just onstage with Turnstile earlier this week.) She has also released a steady stream of new singles, and her companion-piece record wor$t man in america comes out later in the year. She's got a new single today, and it's so fucking good.
Since her album came out, Slayyyter has released the singles "brand new chanel$" and "crank 2," and those are cool. But they've got nothing on her new track "i think he's got a girl," which ditches the overdriven blog-house keyboards and goes for operatic vulnerability instead. Regular Slayyyter collaborators Austin Corona and Wyatt Bernard produced the track, and Slayyyter wrote it with the two of them and Violet Skies. Together, they've really made something.
On "i think he's got a girl," Slayyyter sings about the gradually growing suspicion that her partner is cheating on her, one of the oldest and most dependable pop-song subjects. On Twitter, Slayyyter says, "when i made this song it made me feel like a main character going thru some bullshit on the OC season finale or something..." The track starts out as a new-wave chug, and the chorus sounds like fireworks exploding in the sky. We need to resurrect The OC just so this song can soundtrack a season-finale montage. (Is Slayyyter a Marissa, a Summer, a Seth, or a Ryan? Is she somehow all of them?)
Slayyyter directed her own video for "i think he's got a girl," and it goes hard on suburban '50s housewife postcard iconography. Check it out below.
wor$t man in america is out 12/4 on RECORDS/Columbia.
