We're one week away from the midterm election that will hopefully turn the Senate toward the Democrats and break the Trump administration's hold on all three governmental branches. Down in North Carolina, the Democratic Senate candidate is former governor Roy Cooper, who is vying to replace the retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis. Right now, Cooper holds a very impressive polling lead, but the election hasn't happened yet. On Friday, a bunch of North Carolina musicians played a get-out-the-vote event for Cooper, and Wednesday leader Karly Hartzman was one of them.
On Friday night, Hartzman played a solo set at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, at an event that also included Hiss Golden Messenger, Tift Merritt, Watchhouse and Viv & Riley, and Davie Circle, and along with Governor Josh Stein and Justice Anita Earls — possibly the only time those acts have all shared the same bill. Hartzman's five-song set included thre Wednesday tracks, as well as another unidentified number that seems to be entirely new. Maybe that'll eventually be a Wednesday song, too.
Hartzman's set included a cover, too. She said that she'd tried to "conceive the most patriotic American thing I could possibly think of, who is a Canadian named Neil Young." She then covered "Barstool Blues," from Young's 1975 album Zuma. As it happens, Young is also in the news for campaign-related reasons today. Watch Hartzman play those songs below.
