Bradford Cox went off the radar at the dawn of this decade, and some of us have been longing for his return to the spotlight ever since. Slowly but surely, it's been happening. Cox brought back his solo project Atlas Sound last month in his first proper performance in seven years, playing all-new songs at Philadelphia's Making Time ∞ festival. Since then, a collaboration by Cox and his Deerhunter bandmate Lockett Pundt was announced for Knoxville's Big Ears this coming April, and Atlas Sound popped up on the lineup for Salt Lake City's Kilby Block Party for May and Barcelona's Primavera Sound for June.
And now, there's a new recording. "Octoberland," the first Atlas Sound song in almost 15 years, is out now. It's one of the new songs Cox debuted at Making Time ∞. The sparse, slow track arrives with a music video directed by Cox. Check it out below.
The "Octoberland" lyrics, provided in a press release:
Air becomes hollow.
And orange flash
Pale in the moonlight
And flying fast
Witches burning
In vanilla smoke
Heritage wounded
And I am told
The virus flies every night
God of death
To village find
Women and children
The vanilla smoke
All is orange flash
From the brown oaks
Rub your lesions with this ointment
Made of crushed cicadas
From two months ago
The air is hollow
The air is hollowNightflight
Over Cleveland tonight
Steam rises
Into hollow air
There’s nothing thereSpirits floating into the night
Will they ever find their way
Will they ever find their way
Spirits floating into the night
Will they ever find their way
"Octoberland" is out now on 4AD.
