Toronto rockers Kiwi Jr. recorded their recent album Blowin' Up in Detroit with Holy Fuck's Graham Walsh, and they enlisted local Michigan artists like Stef Chura, Fred Thomas, and Protomartyr's Joe Casey and Greg Ahee to help out (alongside non-Michiganders including Alvvays' Kerri Maclellan and En Attendant Ana's Margaux Bouchaudon). Today, they're back with an outtake from those sessions, a sparkling indie-pop jam entitled "Something Wicked." Frontman Jeremy Gaudet explains:
"Something Wicked" was one of the earliest songs written for the album, and this version was recorded during the Blowin' Up sessions in Detroit. As we kept writing songs and got closer to finishing the album, the wind changed and left the song standing on it's own in terms of the feeling and ideas. It's one of our favourite songs to play, but by the time we finished the album, it just didn't fit in with the rest. The lyric is a take on some Shakespearean witches brewing up something special to steer you off course; trouble coming in all shapes and sizes from where you least expect it.
