Islands' Nick Thorburn is an inveterate collaborator and longtime underground hip-hop fan who has dipped a toe into that world before, working with artists like Busdriver and El-P. But his new single "Got The Devil" finds him diving more fully into rap-producer mode than ever before, providing a psychedelic beat for Houston rapper Fat Tony and WHY?'s Yoni Wolf.
Its B-side, "The River," features Fat Tony and Giovanni Marks, the Los Angeles rapper who used to go by Subtitle. He previously appeared alongside Busdriver on "Where There's A Will, There's A Whalebone" off of Islands' 2006 debut Return To The Sea, and in a new interview, Thorburn describes "The River" as a spiritual sequel to that track.
