Basement Jaxx @ Webster Hall, NYC 10/11/06

Sometimes a show is best measured by past venue experiences -- and by that standard, Basement Jaxx was the most over-the-top, exhilarating dance party we've seen at the Hall yet. The floorboards haven't done the Webster-wobble like that since Bloc Party last year, and for once, it was nice to be on the giving side of the venue's Concert-Hall v. Dance-Club-Below bass blast-offs.

After being patient with the tame (and green) Lily at Hiro the night before, watching Felix and Simon bring their turntables, horns, percussion, larger-than-life singers, and hype men to Webster was a treat of Wembley proportions. This is an act that, in the UK, has nearly sold out the 13,000 capacity, aforementioned arena for a night in December already -- and putting them on the Webster stage was like cramming an elephant into an East Village one-bed: The roof was torn-off and the walls were busting. Basement Jaxx consistently turn out the finest in dance music and live somewhere around the intersection of Hipster and Clubber. It's a funny place. The Jaxx trotted out the hits, they posed and pushed, and left us all in tatters.
