Maybe the Sea of Cortez got their name from John Steinbeck's The Log from the Sea of Cortez (one of the band's three members is a biologist). The Sea Of Cortez recorded their debut full-length in their own studio in L.A. Jay Pellici (Deerhoof, Erase Errata) mixed the record at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone in San Fransisco. "The Shores" begins gently enough, but slowly transforms into an energetic singalong before slowing down again.
