I saw two of my friends' bands play this week and they didn't suck at all. My Teenage Stride were at Pianos Tuesday night and Jed played that song about the Happy Mondays that I like. And last night Cara and I were really impressed by The Morning After's gig at Trash Bar. We didn't remember J. Go and Hallified rocking so hard in high school (which is in deep shit these days ). At the end of the set Hal ripped off his Woody Allen t-shirt to the delight of Viv and Giulia (who came all the way from Alabama!).

What do you call a movement that encompasses everything from the Shins' '60s-influenced pop to Franz Ferdinand's '80s-style dance rock? Well, if "Seth Cohen rock'' doesn't take (and we're pretty certain it won't), Shins frontman James Mercer has another suggestion. ''It's fun-grunge,'' he says. ''I think we should call it funge.''
