Although we don't expect there'll be much competition for the honor, the new Mystery Jets song is the best new tune you'll download today. In fairness to the London based outfit, "Flakes" would take that honor most any day it dropped, really -- far from the eccentric prog dalliances of their last LP, somehow even more true to that album's title: this is the music for making dens, all warm 'n' fuzzy with shaking sleigh bells, hearth-friendly harmonies, vulnerable Buckley-ish vocals, etc. Call it a holiday track, brought to you by dad andson Harrison + hipster DJ extraordinaire Erol Alkan.

Mystery Jets - "Flakes" (MP3)
Yep, that's Alkan. We wouldn't have figured electro Erol + proggy Jets would yeild such magnificently swinging retro pop, but there it is, and it is note perfect. More studio help came from mixer Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, PiL), so props to the the Jets for nabbing some deft studio sharks. The track's from the Mystery men's next LP, also Erol's first full album production credit (or at least first which we can confirm; as suggested by their LCD cover collab, Erol and Franz are getting awfully comfy these days). Anyway, Mystery Jets next one's out sometime next year -- we'll most definitely keep ya posted.
