Miya Folick – “Stop Talking” Video
Miya Folick earned herself a spot on our 25 Great EPs From 2017 and Best New Bands Of 2017 lists last fall on the strength of her excellent Give It To Me EP. Over the past few months, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter has shared two new songs, the powerful post-Harvey Weinstein war cry “Deadbody” and the pulsating “Stock Image.” And today, she’s officially announced her debut full-length album.
Premonitions, which Folick co-produced alongside Sky Ferreira/Charli XCX/Angel Olsen producer Justin Raisen and Yves Rothman, will be out at the end of next month. “I wanted this album to be the vehicle for a hopeful, truthful, generous, and loving world,” Folick says in a statement. “I tried not to posture or pretend. I wrote about my life as I’ve seen it and how I’d like to see it, as both memory and premonition.” Along with the previously released tracks, it’ll feature eight other new ones including “Stop Talking,” which she’s also shared today.
“‘Stop Talking’ is about being demanding of your friends, and telling them when their behavior isn’t serving them,” Folick tells Pitchfork. “Saying, ‘Hey, you talk about this a lot, and when you talk about this a lot, it becomes your thoughts, and your thoughts become who you are.'” Over a bright, disco-inflected pop groove, Folick tells off a friend who won’t shut up about their latest love interest: “I’m sorry I don’t mean to be rude, but I think I’m losing my mind/ Stop talking about that boy.”
The song comes with a music video co-directed by Ariel Fisher, Sarah C. Prinz, and Folick herself. In it, Folick performs a mannered synchronized dance routine with a group of friends. Watch, listen, and check out Premonitions’ full tracklist below.
