Hazel English – “Heartbreaker”
Way back in 2016, the Australian-born and Oakland-based musician Hazel English was a Stereogum Artist To Watch. She’s been cranking out really, really good music since then. Last year, English released her EP Summer Nights. This year, she’s dropped a couple of covers: the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Slide” in March, the La’s’ “There She Goes” just a few weeks ago. Now, English is back with a new song of her own.
Hazel English co-wrote the new single with producer Jackson Phillips, who’s her longtime collaborator and who’s also known as Day Wave. It’s a soft, hazy pop song about some asshole: “You always made me watch the movies that you liked, and you never let me decide/ When I tried to show you my favorite Lou Reed song, you told me his voice is such a crime.” Fuck this guy! This guy has no business inspiring a song this good. Listen to “Heartbreaker” below.
