J Dilla – “Anthem”
The late rap production legend J Dilla recorded a ton of music before he died, and we still haven’t heard all of it. A forthcoming Dilla album, The Diary, consists mostly of raps that Dilla recorded over beats from other producers, including Madlib, Pete Rock, and Nottz. Dilla made it in the early ’00s, but it never saw release. And he actually produced both of the Diary tracks that make up a forthcoming 12″, “Anthem” b/w “Trucks.” “Anthem” is a typically gorgeous hazy-thump production, and you can guess its vintage from the “Pass The Courvosier” reference and the R. Kelly interpolation. Dilla’s knuckleheaded buddies Frank N Dank rap on it, too. Listen below.
“Anthem” b/w “Trucks” is out 4/15 on Pay Jay, the new label managed by Dilla’s family and estate.
