Watch Nirvana’s Shoutout Video For Confused Virginia Tech Mascot
Yesterday, on their Tumblr, Sub Pop Records published a letter (above) they received from a slightly clueless (but enthusiastic!) Virginia Tech student/homecoming candidate/mascot “wondering if Nirvana would send a quick video to us that we could include in our video collage” for homecoming. It would be “great publicity” for Nirvana, noted the student, as they would appear alongside other VA Tech student faves like Big & Rich, the Ying Yang Twins, and “three famous NFL players.” This is breaking my heart, guys. Kurt loved football players!
Anyway, wrote the student, “we’d love to have her in our video.” (Common mistake; Kurt was very ladylike.) The video would need to be no more than a quick shoutout from the band, saying something to the effect of:
“What’s up Virginia Tech? This is Nirvana! Just wanted to wish you guys a Happy Homecoming Week and good luck at the game this Saturday. LETS GO HOKIES!”
So, in the grand Sub Pop tradition, the label “dressed up and obliged.”
Today, they posted their VA Tech-boosting video … starring Nirvana! It’s a slightly altered lineup, of course (um, no, not this one), but surely the student realized this immediately: That guy is playing guitar right-handed! Also, it’s Mark Arm! But wait a sec … no, no, the shout-out is all wrong! It’s supposed to be Hokies, not Hoagies! Damn you, Nirvana!
