DJ Tennis – “You Closed My Eyes” (Stereogum Premiere)
DJ Tennis is Berlin resident Manfredi Romano, who grew up bouncing between New Jersey and Italy in the ’70s and ’80s and went on to a diverse career in computer science, indie rock, soundtrack work, music promotion and DJing at the tennis club where he used to play semi-professionally (hence the name). These days he co-runs Life And Death Records, a label that aspires to be like Warp — “shorthand for an electronic music label that isn’t necessarily tied to the dance floor,” as this Resident Advisor profile explains. That might give you a vague idea of what Romano is going for with his music as DJ Tennis, non-danceable experimental electronic fare that draws from a heritage of post-punk, post-rock, IDM, and classic rock. “You Closed My Eyes,” a track from his upcoming double EP Local, somehow combines all those threads, and the results are both enthralling and slightly creepy. Check it out below.
