Pharrell – “Frontin’ (Disclosure Remix)” (Feat. Jay Z)
Although people tend to think of music publications as monolithic hive-mind entities, the Stereogum staff comprises individuals, and we don’t always agree. One prime example: In his review of Pharrell’s G I R L, Tom called “Frontin’,” Pharrell’s debut solo single from 2003, “a vaguely terrible lounge-funk midtempo jam.” Although “Frontin'” is definitely lounge-funk, unquestionably midtempo, and unequivocally a jam, there’s nothing vaguely terrible about it. The thing pops and fizzes with Skateboard P’s best despite one of Jay Z’s less effective guest spots, conjuring a minimal melancholy chill-out mode that closed out summer 2003 right. Thankfully, Disclosure seem to realize “Frontin'” is great. They’ve delivered a typically brisk and airy garage remix that stays right in their wheelhouse without merely treading water. Here’s what they wrote on SoundCloud:
Little re-work we did of one of our favourite songs ever… Might give this one away for free when we reach 1m likes on facebook… we shall see 😉 ENJOY!
And here’s the song:
In other Disclosure news, Madonna posted a photo from the DJ booth during their set in Brooklyn last night. Are they working on something together? They did say they’re making music with all their dream collaborators these days.
