When British trio Alt-J played “Left Hand Free,” the blooz-rocking half-joke from their new album This Is All Yours on Letterman last week, they looked bored and listless. But doing the layered, intricate “Every Other Freckle” on Conan last night, they brought a sense of presence and energy that they didn’t have last time around, and I don’t think it was just because “Every Other Freckle” is a much better song than “Left Hand Free.” The band had their light show working for them this time, and frontman Joe Newman straight up winked at the camera while singing a line about licking you like a packet of crisps, which is a wonderfully goofy thing to do. Also, that is some impressively tricky drumming. This was a deeply satisfying performance all around, and you can watch it below.
