Stereogum and Sydney synth-pop band Dappled Cities go way back. That band's singer and guitarist Dave Rennick had been working on a solo project of late, before deciding to bring in fellow Dappled Cities members Ned Cooke and Alan Kumpulainen. The result is And (presumably short for Alan, Ned, Dave), a trio who craft disco music imbued with a kinetic energy, as proven by the new single "U Know Me." Everything here -- from the thumping rhythm section, the insane Moog solo (from Donny Benét), and Rennick's urgent vocals -- barrels forward with a constantly growing momentum. The single will be the first in a series of five, leading up to the group's debut album next year. It's nice to hear a new band hit the ground running, and "U Know Me" finds And sprinting.
