Joseph “Kansas Joe” McCoy wrote the blues song “Why Don’t You Do Right?,” originally recorded as “Weed Smoker’s Dream,” in 1936. Peggy Lee had a hit with it in 1942. But most of us know the song now because it’s the one Jessica Rabbit sings when she makes her dramatic nightclub entrance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. We can all safely assume that that’s the version Lana Del Rey was thinking about when she decided to cover the song. Last night, LDR opened her Endless Summer tour at a Houston arena, and near the end of the show, she tried her own version of the song. And now that I think about it, Jessica Rabbit might be the single greatest influence on LDR’s whole public persona. Check out a fan-made video of the cover, as well as the Roger Rabbit scene, below.
