Sarah Neufeld – “We’ve Got A Lot” (Stereogum Premiere)
Sarah Neufeld technically already released a record this year; the tense and aching Never Were The Way She Was was a joint project with her frequent collaborator, saxophonist Colin Stetson. Neufeld is a violinist who often tours with other bands (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), but right now she’s on the road opening for St. Vincent and establishing her status as a solo artist in her own right. Neufeld’s last album was 2013’s Hero Brother, and she recently finished recording material for a follow-up record. As yet, there’s no official announcement for the album’s release, but today we are sharing the first song from her batch of new material. The song is called “We’ve Got A Lot” and focuses mostly around the sharp, bright interplay of Neufeld’s voice and her violin. It also features Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara, and Stetson plays a saxophone solo at the end.
Here’s what Neufeld says of the song:
I wrote some of the music while on tour with Arcade Fire last year, and the rest last fall, while alone in the woods. Somewhere along the line, a new spirit emerged in the music and I knew there had to be drums on the record. Jeremy Gara was kind enough to lend his talents and we had a ton of fun turning my crazy violin music into a new beast. “We’ve Got A Lot” also features Colin Stetson and Hans Bernhard doubling up on some sassy low end. I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to releasing the whole shebang in the near future!
