Pavement have just announced The Secret History Vol 1, a new rarities compilation to be released in August. The 30-track double LP will contain material from the Slanted And Enchanted era (1990-1992), including unreleased session tracks, John Peel sessions, and a 1992 live concert. The album will also come with essays written by Stephen Malkmus, Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs, Matador Records, Billions Corporation, and Drag City bosses, and a special gatefold designed by Rob Carmichael, the guy behind the covers for Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion and the Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca.

According to a press release, this will be the first in a series of “shadow albums” to be released over the next five years, with each compilation serving as a companion to a specific album and era in Pavement’s discography. Check out Vol 1’s full tracklisting below; it’s a great starter kit for listeners looking to go deeper, and although longtime fans will that all of this material appeared on the 2002 reissue Slanted And Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe, this is the first time many of these recordings have been available on vinyl (25 out of 30 tracks, to be exact).
