Ms. Lauryn Hill – “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” (Nina Simone Cover)
Netflix will release the original Nina Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone?, this Friday, and we’ve already heard a series of songs off the accompanying RCA release, Nina Simone Revisited: A Tribute To Nina Simone. Lauryn Hill shared her renditions of “Feeling Good” and “I’ve Got Life,” and now we’re treated with another selection. Simone’s “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” is a re-working of a classic Appalachian folk song, and Hill’s interpretation does justice to the legendary singer’s classic recordings, adding contemporary R&B flair to the outro. In addition to Hill’s contributions, Nina Simone Revisited: A Tribute To Nina Simone, will also feature covers by Mary J. Blige, Common, Gregory Porter, Jazmine Sullivan, and Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa. Listen to “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” below.
Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone is out 7/10 on RCA.
