Martin Courtney – “Vestiges”
We’ve now reached the point where every remaining original member of Real Estate has a solo project going. Matthew Mondanile has Ducktails, and Alex Bleeker has Alex Bleeker & The Freaks. And now singer/guitarist Martin Courtney is about to hit us with a new solo project. Thus far, Courtney’s only solo-artist experience has been a pair of Guided By Voices covers on a 2010 tribute compilation. But now, as Pitchfork points out, Courtney has shared a gorgeously florid folk-rock jangler called “Vestiges.” Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere produced the song and played bass, and Woods drummer Aaron Neveu played on it. The overlap of the Real Estate/Woods Venn diagram is a pretty huge area, and “Vestiges” fits nicely into the middle of it. It’s an exceedingly warm, comfortable song, and you can hear it below.
On his website, Courtney writes that he’s spent the past year and a half, when not touring, working on songs with Taveniere, so perhaps we’ll hear more soon.
