Palehound – “Miss Independent” (Kelly Clarkson Cover)
Kelly Clarkson has been behind some of the best, most unassailable pop songs of the past two decades — “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “Because Of You,” and “A Moment Like This” marked the first half of her career, and every few years she’ll come back with a barn-burner, like she did with “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Growing up with a pop star like Clarkson was a dream, and Palehound’s Ellen Kempner must think so too because she just released a cover of one of her greatest: “Miss Independent.”
“I used to be totally obsessed with American Idol, and when I heard it was ending, I started listening to a ton of Kelly Clarkson again, and became obsessed like never before,” she told Vulture. “She’s an amazing role model with great songwriters working for her, and ‘Miss Independent’ in particular is a song I remember loving when I was like 10. To this day, I feel empowered singing along to it.”
The Boston-based musician takes all the knotted, twisty anxieties that marked her debut album, Dry Food, which was released earlier this month, and translates them beautifully through the glistening, hyper-confident pop world. The result is fucking awesome. Listen below.
