I hope Bob Dylan never stops putting out box sets. As long as there are diehard Dylan fans who will buy each and every anthology, I think they might as well be served with all the rarities, outtakes, and odds-and-ends that Columbia and Dylan can scrape together. If you view such releases with that generosity of spirit, then the next installment of Dylan’s bootleg series is a logical extension of the previously established release schedule, and not an attempt to wring as much money as possible from the peak of his artistic contributions. Titled The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, the newest anthology will be out on 11/6. It contains outtakes, rehearsal tracks, and of course, the elusive alternative version of tracks off Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde On Blonde.

Here’s the story behind the anthology in video form:

The anthology is available in essentially three sizes: the 18-CD collectors edition, the 6-CD deluxe edition, and the 2-CD Best Of edition. The Best Of edition is also available on vinyl, and the extensive 18-CD deluxe edition claims to contain “every note” from those recording sessions. The collection also comes with an annotated book full of memorabilia, rare photographs, and essays by Bill Flanagan and Sean Wilentz.
