Jeremih Blasts Def Jam Over Botched Album Rollout
Jeremih’s lithe, meticulously crafted Late Nights: The Album was originally supposed to come out in 2013, but for more than two years it dangled in mysterious limbo, only to appear without warning earlier this month on the heels of several new singles. The whole time, most outsiders assumed Jeremih’s label, Def Jam, was continually pushing the date back, seemingly unsatisfied with the runaway success of first “Don’t Tell ‘Em” and then “Planes,” but the Chicago R&B star later revealed that the eternal delay was a result of his perfectionist tinkering. Maybe that’s the full story, or maybe not; Jeremih did take a shot at Def Jam about a year ago in the one-off single “Big Dawg Shit.” Regardless of who was responsible for the weirdly executed surprise drop, Jeremih is now venting his frustrations with Def Jam over a different aspect of his album rollout.
As Complex points out, Jeremih posted several tweets this weekend complaining about Late Nights: The Album’s pricing and lack of availability in stores. Jokingly tweeting at @DeafJamRecords, he wrote:
y’all don’t even deserve my voice. It’s not the fact that my album was actually priced $18.99. There’s actually no CD’s in the store to even buy, that’s the main point. Each Best Buy was shipped 6-7 copies a piece. We checked in to the Corperate offices at Best Buy in Chicago and they told us LateNights wasn’t on this wks added shipment list, nor next weeks?? #MyAlbumJustDroppedLastWeek.
He topped off the rant by linking to the “Big Dawg Shit” video, which you can watch below. At least Jeremih can take solace in the fact that Late Nights: The Album was Stereogum’s Album Of The Week last week, and closer “Paradise” cracked our list of the week’s best songs.
