A few years ago, AlunaGeorge were at the forefront of a new wave of R&B with the long string of singles that led up to their 2013 debut, Body Music. Since then, they’ve shown up on a number of high-profile collaborations with the likes of Diplo and Skrillex, ZHU, Baauer, and DJ Snake, who gave new life to their old single “You Know You Like It.” We haven’t heard much from the duo themselves since their debut, however (outside of a one-off called “Supernatural” in 2014), which makes “I’m In Control” their quasi-comeback track. Unfortunately, it’s pretty underwhelming — their new single features Popcaan, who mellows out their minimalist R&B pops with a dancehall sway but, at least to my ear, the song doesn’t come close to the addictive highs of AlunaGeorge’s previous efforts. It seems they’ve retreated to the back of the pack they once headed. But your mileage may vary! Take a listen below.
